We are very fortunate at Sompting Village Morris to have a mixture of sides to suit all ages and genders. Our Morris Minor side originated when the early members of the side had their own children and they would dance alongside their parents in replica adult mini kits. Many of these children continued dancing or playing with SVM as they became adults and for a while there were no Minors.
In October 2016 we realised there were some very interested small people who belonged to new members of the side and who wanted to dance their own dances. We therefore resurrected the Morris Minors and now have a fantastic side of 8 youngsters who dance both by themselves and with the adults. The age range is flexible and the plan is that they will migrate seamlessly into dancing regularly with the Larks (our mixed side).
The kit of today's Morris Minors has been brought up to date and they have each designed their own outfit, based on the red, black and gold of Sompting colours and proudly displaying their own Sompting Morris Minor Badge.
Our talented and eager Morris Minors dance a variety of dances written a long time ago for the original SVM Minor's side, as well as a Border dance gifted to the them and the Larks team by Roundhill Morris, but recently have also put together some of the traditional Morris steps into dances of their own, including one in the Molly tradition- a first for SVM. They are currently working on creating a totally new dance to bring Morris Dancing right into the 21st Century. As one of our Minors said – Morris Dancing is the original Street Dance!
