"May you live as
long as you want to
and want to
as long as you live"
The SOMPTING TIPTEERERS
have been presenting their traditional street play for over 30 years, usually as part of the Christmas and New Year festivities. Be warned it is not for the faint hearted as it involves violence, gratuitous verbal abuse and pyrotechnics of the most alarming nature.
We attended the MUMMERS UNCONVENTION in Bath and Gloucester where we astounded audiences of hundreds along with 20 other ragbag teams of Mummers from
as far as Spain and the USA.

We are an English Morris side, formed in 1978, performing dance traditions that include Cotswold, North-West, Sussex and Border Morris. The 60-strong membership comprises a men’s team, a women’s team, The Larks (young adults) , a childrens side of Morris Minors and of course a band of versatile musicians.
Our dance programme ranges from Wednesday night stands at local Sussex pubs (often ending with music and a sing-song) to appearances at national Folk Festivals, including Rochester, Shrewsbury and Nottingham, and international events in Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Belgium and France and this year Greece.
Our traditional celebrations include the early morning May Day procession in Shoreham followed by the crowning of the May Queen; the Summer Solstice dancing-down of the sun on Highdown Hill with beacon and torches; and in the autumn the Battle of the Conkers. At Christmas & New Year, we enact the ancient, local Tipteerers’ or Mummers’ Play. For the Wassail on January 5th, join us with your drums and whistles for our torchlit procession.
Sompting can be booked for corporate displays and fetes, weddings and even music and promotinoal videos. For Medieval Banquets, Dickensian Feasts and other themed events, the company of Sompting Banqueteers perform colourful entertainments with music, dance and general mayhem.
We welcome new members, both dancers and musicians. If you are interested in joining the side or booking an event please contact the ‘Bag’.
